Why I Believe the Tosyali-SULB Project Matters for Libya's Future

Together with our partners at Tosyali Holding, we're working to build what is expected to become the world's largest Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) complex in Ras Al-Mangar, east of Benghazi. Tosuali-SULB still requires a lot of work, but we're continuing to move forward step by step bringing an idea to real life.
For me, what makes this project special isn't just its size, it's more about the potential that it can bring to Libya. Yes, it will be a major steel complex, but also it might be helpful in strengthening our industrial sector, creating jobs, attracting international investment and helping build a stronger future for our economy.
The site will cover around 380 hectares and is expected to produce up to 7.5 million tonnes of direct reduced iron each year. We're also planning a dedicated export port, which will make it easier to export Libyan products to international markets and strengthen the logistics network.
Another part of the project that's important to me is its focus on sustainability. From the beginning, we've wanted to build a facility that uses modern technology to operate more efficiently and reduce its environmental impact. Current plans are expected to reduce energy consumption by around 25 percent and carbon emissions by approximately 30 percent compared with the traditional steel production complexes.
The project is also expected to create around 7,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction and once operations begin. That means opportunities not only for engineers and skilled workers, but also for local contractors, suppliers, transport companies and many other businesses that will support the project along the way.
