Seeing Progress Across Every Corner of the Site
One thing that stands out on a project this size is how quickly the site can change. You could come and visit one week and see mostly foundations, then come back a short time later and see steel structures, new concrete work and several areas all moving forward at the same time. This is the picture at the Benghazi steel complex today.
One of the biggest developments has been the piling works, which are more than 95 per cent complete. One of the major initial phases of the project is almost complete with only 74 piles remaining. It’s the kind of progress you don’t always see in pictures but it lays the groundwork for what is to come.
We are working on a number of important areas around the site. Construction crews are still working at CDRI Warehouse and concrete work continues around the Cooling Tower and Main Control Building. Work continues on the Oxide Screen Station and Dust Collector F83 system with steel installation in the Reformer Area. Every place has its own timetable, but they’re all heading in the same direction.
Concrete works are now 63 percent complete overall with piling, backfilling and steel installation all underway simultaneously, after each section is finished, another team can start the next step and that is how a project of this size gradually emerges.
Every day there are more than 260 engineers, technicians, contractors and workers on site. Some teams work with concrete, some with steel, some with equipment or engineering systems, but all teams work on the same project. It is the coordination across the site that keeps things moving.
