Where the Project Stands Today

There is a story in every stage of construction. At the steel complex in Benghazi, the latest work on site reveals a project that is slowly emerging from its early groundwork into a phase where its scale is becoming easier to appreciate. What was mainly excavation and foundations is starting to look like the industrial complex we’ve been working towards.
One of the biggest changes has been the progress below. Deep piling is now almost complete with the vast majority of the planned piles already in place, including another eight in the Cooling Tower area. It’s the kind of work that often goes unrecognized, but it’s also the work that everything else depends on. Before you build the buildings, you have to get the foundations right.
The early stages are now over, and activity is increasing on the rest of the site. The foundations for the CDRI Passivation Silos are now complete and concrete work continues in a number of key areas including the 220kV substation, the Main Control Room, the Oxygen Reduction Building, the Gas Treatment Area and the Duct Bridge. “Instead of progress in one area, you see different parts of the complexity moving forward at the same time.
The same goes for the steelwork. More than 4,900 tonnes of structural steel have been placed to date, including a further 126 tonnes during the latest reporting period. The Reformer Area, Utility Compressor Room and warehouse facilities continue to develop and each site visit shows something new that wasn't there before.
What I like most is that progress is not measured by a number or one structure built. You can measure that by the number of people who come to work each day and the amount of work that gets done between updates. Engineers, contractors and construction teams are all working side by side, each with responsibility for a different part of the project but all moving towards the same goal.
We are still in the middle of our journey and there is a lot more work to do. But look at the site today and you can see just how far we've come. The Benghazi steel complex is slowly becoming a reality and I look forward to sharing the next stage of that progress with you in the coming weeks.
