Looking Beyond Construction
Construction isn't the only thing that needs attention on a project like this. Every so often, it's important to step away from the site, sit down together and talk about the people doing the work.
That's what a recent meeting with Mr. Tariq Haiba Al-Meshiti, Director of the Benghazi Labour and Rehabilitation Office, was about. Representatives from the Occupational Health and Safety Department and the Labour Inspection Department also joined us. We reviewed the safety measures already in place, talked through some of the challenges that naturally come with a project of this size and discussed where we can keep improving.
One thing everyone agreed on was the importance of training. Procedures are important, but they only work when people understand them. The more experience people gain, the more confident they become, and that helps create a safer working environment for everyone. That's why we'll continue working with the Labour and Rehabilitation Office on specialised training programmes and keep that communication going as the project moves forward.
A meeting like this probably won't receive the same attention as a major construction update, and that's perfectly fine. It's still an important part of the project. Building something on this scale isn't only about concrete, steel and equipment. It's also about making sure the people on site have the knowledge, support and confidence they need to do their jobs safely every day. As Benghazi's industrial sector continues to grow, working closely with local authorities and sharing that responsibility will only become more important.
